Studies and scientific opinions

The project has been based on worldwide best practice in terms of preparation and cleaning of the ships in order for them to serve as artificial reef structures. All previous experiences were analysed, and the best of these were learned from and replicated, avoiding the problems encountered.

Support Documents for Worldwide Best Practice

Some of the most important documents that were used as the basis for application on our project were the following:
  • Clean-up Standards for Ocean Disposal of Vessels, Aircraft, Platforms & Other Structures) – Canadian Environmental Protection Branch;
  • London Convention and Protocol/UNEP - Guidelines for the Placement of Artificial Reefs;
  • Basil Convention (Chapter four);
  • National Guidance: Best Management Practices for Preparing Vessels Intended to Create Artificial Reefs – US Environmental Protection Agency;
  • National Artificial reef Plan: Guidelines for Siting, Construction, Development, and Assessment of Artificial Reefs – US NOAA;
  • Guideline for Marine Artificial Reef Materials – Atlantic and Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commissions;
  • Guidelines for the Placement at Sea of Matter for Purpose Other Than the Mere Disposal (Construction of Artificial Reefs) – UN Environment Programme.

Studies Carried out for the Project

The feasibility study for the project consisted of the realisation of various advance studies, principally the following:
  • Characterisation study of a marine zone for the effects of the creation of an artificial reef aimed at s subaquatic eco-tourism;
  • Analysis of Environmental Incidents;
  • Study of archaeological prospecting;
  • Planning of sea signposting.

These studies are available to anyone who wishes to consult them.
