CFR Ernesto Tavares de Almeida Carvalho (1867 - 1924)
Ernesto Carvalho was born on July 3rd, 1867 in Lamego and enlisted with the Army on October 4th, 1883, soon after he turned 16, and was promoted to the Navy on August 25th 1890.
From the Navy, a promotion he was given in 1890, he rose to the post of Frigate Captain on August 24th, 1917.
Almeida Carvalho excelled in the field of hydrography and oceanography, having taken part in important missions, specifically the Quelimane Hydrographical Mission which took place in Mozambique in 1906/7 and the Coast of Portugal Hydrographical Mission (which took place between 1913 and 1918) one of several such missions along the national coast in the period between 1915 and 1924.
An official of the Santiago Order of the Sword and a Knight of the Military Order of Avis, Almeida Carvalho was also named a member of the Oceanographic Commission of the Vasco da Gama Aquarium.
Almeida Carvalho died as Commander of the hydrographical ship "Fifth of October" - formerly the "Amélia" yacht - Almeida Carvalho died, on February 21st, 1924. However, he left behind published works about seawater density and ocean depth.
